12.15.04Voters defeat $8.5M library planSag Harbor school district voters turned out in droves to defeat a controversial $8.5 million plan to build a new public library yesterday, after months of debate that had split the community. About 1,300 people showed up and voted against the referendum by almost a 2 to 1 margin, said Sandra Kruel, board president of the Sag Harbor School District, which administered the voting for the local library district.

Voters will be asked to approve an $8.5 million bond to fund the project next Tuesday — or maybe not. At issue is the plan to move the basic operations from the historic library on Main Street to a new building near Mashashimuet Park.
